Background-

India’s automobile retail market posted its highest-ever monthly sales at 25.37 lakh units, helping the industry close its best first half of a financial year, the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) reported.

Retail sales climbed 31.82% from a year earlier and 4.69% from the previous month. FADA noted that a low base amplified the annual gain, since buyers held back purchases ahead of the GST 2.0 rollout last year. Five of six vehicle categories logged record sales for the month. Retail for the first half of FY27 totaled 1.55 crore units, up 20.77%.

FADA President Sai Giridhar said the record volumes, monthly growth and half-year performance give a clearer view of demand. He added that retail grew about 17% over the first five months of FY27, a more accurate run-rate.

Two-wheelers led with 17,90,188 units, up 33.08%. Passenger vehicles rose 32.10% to 4,27,213 units. Commercial vehicles gained 37.62% to 1,03,557 units, crossing the one-lakh mark for the first time. Three-wheelers rose 22.25% to 1,32,570 units. Tractors reached 76,906 units, up 13.75% year-on-year, despite a later festive calendar and patchy monsoon.

Electric vehicle sales hit a monthly high of about 3.34 lakh units, roughly 13% of total retail.

Dealers stay cautiously optimistic, with 75.57% expecting growth as Navratri and Dussehra lift demand. For the festive quarter, 78.28% of dealers expect growth. FADA said converting festive interest into purchases and keeping vehicles affordable will sustain momentum.
