Background

The physical AI startup known as Prometheus, co-founded by billionaire Jeff Bezos as well as the co-founder of Verily, Vik Bajaj, has raised an additional $12 billion, valuing the company at $41 billion, thereby instilling confidence in investors regarding the emerging industry of physical AI.

Investors that have contributed to the financing include Bezos, JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, among others. The funding comes after the startup made its debut last year and received $6.2 billion in the process.

Prometheus claims to be building an artificial general engineer, which is basically an AI program that will enable automation of physical designs and manufacturing processes such as those used to build jet engines, industrial machines, and even drugs. The company aims to transform engineering workflows by using artificial intelligence to handle tasks traditionally performed by large engineering teams.

Bezos said advances in AI-driven productivity could improve living standards and create new economic opportunities rather than reduce the need for human workers. He argued that higher productivity would increase demand across industries and reshape workforce requirements over time.

The startup currently employs around 150 people across offices in San Francisco, London and Zurich. While the company has not disclosed details of its technology or customer projects, it said a significant share of the newly raised capital will be used to support its extensive computing requirements.

The latest funding round places Prometheus among the world’s most highly valued AI startups and marks one of the largest investments in the physical AI industry. The sector has attracted growing interest from investors who view AI applications tied to real-world manufacturing and engineering as more defensible than software-only businesses due to the complexity of physical systems and industrial processes.
