Nationwide Brings Tech Confidence to the High Street with Digital Lessons

Nationwide Building Society has launched a major initiative to help millions of people across the UK gain confidence with technology. The new Digital Lessons programme is now available in all of Nationwide’s 605 branches, offering free, face-to-face support to anyone who wants to improve their digital skills, regardless of whether they are a customer.

The move comes as research shows that around 11.3 million adults in the UK lack essential digital skills, with many struggling to access online services safely. Nationwide’s program helps people learn everyday digital skills in simple ways, like setting up devices, using online banking, spotting scams, and making video calls.

Since the initiative began in July, Nationwide has already held over 560 sessions, helping more than 3,000 people improve their confidence online. Each lesson lasts up to 30 minutes and is delivered in person by staff trained to provide patient, accessible support.

The building society’s commitment to digital inclusion goes hand in hand with its pledge to keep all branches open until at least 2028. This ensures customers can continue to access both in-person and online support at a time when many banks are closing their high street locations.

According to recent figures, 4.8 million working-age adults in the UK have never been online, and over half are unable to complete all 20 tasks in the government’s Essential Digital Skills Framework. The effects of digital exclusion are serious; it can lead to a higher risk of fraud, financial loss, loneliness, and difficulty finding jobs.

Nationwide’s Head of Branches said the lessons reflect the organisation’s ongoing effort to support communities, “Digital exclusion remains one of the most pressing challenges today. We’re proud to offer practical help to anyone who needs it, helping people build the confidence and skills to thrive in a digital world.”

Through this nationwide rollout, the society is reaffirming its mission to make the digital world more inclusive, right from the local high street.
