Background-
India stands ready to welcome leaders from the expanded BRICS bloc as New Delhi hosts the 18th Leaders’ Summit, marking 20 years since the grouping first took shape. The chairship gives India a platform to guide talks on trade, digital technology, finance, energy security, and reform of global institutions.
Government and state leaders from member countries, along with invited guests and senior officials, will gather at Bharat Mandapam in Pragati Maidan for the two-day event. A Business Forum and a Women’s Business Alliance session will open proceedings at the same venue.
Through its chairship, India has already run more than 350 BRICS-linked meetings and events across over 25 cities nationwide. New Delhi has framed its presidency around the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” tied to a wider “Humanity First” vision.
Planned sessions will tackle supply chain resilience, cross-border payment systems, wider use of national currencies, growth of small and medium enterprises, digital trade, and artificial intelligence. Leaders will also discuss energy security, climate resilience, development finance, and changes to multilateral bodies.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will host the summit. Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed his attendance, and Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to join.
Among other leaders set to attend are South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
The bloc’s core membership now stands at 11 countries: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the UAE.
