Background:

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is reinforcing its position as the world’s largest container ship owner with plans to finalize a major order for 10 LNG dual-fuel container vessels worth approximately $1.4 billion. The order will be placed with Zhoushan Changhong International, MSC’s long-standing shipbuilding partner.

According to TradeWinds, the deal includes six firm and four optional 11,400 TEU dual-fuel container ships, with the first batch expected for delivery in 2029. Shipbrokers estimate each vessel will cost around $140 million. Once confirmed, the order at Zhoushan Changhong International will keep the shipyard busy until late 2029.

MSC is building over 30 new LNG dual-fuel ships, costing about $8.5 billion.

Zhoushan Changhong International has also grown quickly, with three main shipbuilding and repair bases covering more than 6.5 million square meters and a coastline of over 20,000 meters. The shipyard’s facilities allow annual shipbuilding of over 5 million deadweight tons, repair of more than 500 vessels, and shipbreaking capacity of 1.2 million light displacement tons.

The 11,400 TEU LNG dual-fuel vessel design was independently developed by CIMC Ocean Engineering Design & Research Institute (CIMC ORIC), with full intellectual property rights. Each ship is 299 meters long, 48.2 meters wide, and 27 meters deep.

MSC’s dual-fuel ships show its focus on greener shipping. The order is expected by the end of 2025.
